Christmas is just around the corner – and Cheltenham will be full of seasonal joy

Plans are well underway for another spectacular Christmas lights switch-on event and a special late-night shopping event.

As well as the cross-street illuminations between Boots and Primark and Chameleons and Coco Couture and the ceiling of light on The Strand, brought to Cheltenham last year, the BID has extended the reach of the lights to include Winchcombe Street. Cheltenham Borough Council has upgraded the power infrastructure to ensure the town is glowing and continue to help fund the lights.

The BID has commissioned Evenlode Productions to bring a favourite Christmas story to life. The three ghosts of Charles Dickens’s A Christmas Carol will bring the spirit of Christmas alive.  The thousands of people coming to town on November 23rd for the switch-on will be delighted by the larger than life puppets.  The ghosts of Christmas past, present and future will parade through the town; one starting at The Brewery Quarter; one from near Cambray Place and the other from Montpellier. As they tell their stories, they will meet near Neptune’s Fountain and gather near The Queens Hotel to join Father Christmas to switch on the lights.

Thursday December 5th will be a night full of festivities as we see carollers, choirs and bands perform on the streets of Cheltenham.

Working with Cheltenham Borough Council and Stagecoach, we have organised some generous travel incentives on the day.  The council has agreed to fund free bus travel on Stagecoach services within Cheltenham, including both park and ride sites, as well as free parking in all Cheltenham Borough Council car parks from 1pm. Parking in the CitiPark car park, at the rear of John Lewis and Partners, will also be free from 1pm.

Now it’s over to you.  We’d like to see all the BID businesses getting involved with this initiative and staying open until 8pm and offering something extra on the night. FESTIVE IDEAS

Marketing Cheltenham will be doing a lot of publicity around the day so it really is up to the businesses in the town to help make this a success.

There are already a number of you planning events in-store and the BID will share these across our social media channels. You can upload your events free of charge on So, whether it’s mince pies or music on offer at your business, please let us know.
